I recently entered a speed writing competition. The contest is tiered. Participants are placed into groups (the contest started with about 20 groups). Each group is given a genre, an object, and a setting. There is a 48 hour time limit during which to write the story. The works can only be 1000 words long--maximum. As you can imagine, it's not exactly simple to come up with a cohesive and effective plot. I however, have always been a glutton for punishment.
Anyway, the stories are ranked and each place is assigned a point value (1st place 25 pts., 2nd place 22 pts., 3rd place 20 pts., etc.). The writers with the highest point values are allowed to move on to the next round where they are assigned a new genre, object, and setting to write about. People are knocked out as the competition progresses and groups are rearranged.
It should be fun to see how this pans out. I'll post my assignments and stories here. Please enjoy--and make sure you appreciate the sweat, tears, and agonizing frustration that goes into creating something out of someone's else's nothing. 48 hours has never seen like such a short amount of time. Arggg!
